En el golfo de Vizcaya, situados a ambos lados de la actual frontera entre España y Francia, se asientan desde tiempo inmemorial Los Vascos. Un pueblo esforzado y acostumbrado a luchar contra una naturaleza a menudo hostil que desafía su tesón y coraje.
En la antigüedad el trabajo de leñador (en euskera: “Aizkolari”) se realizaba por medio de cuadrillas que vivían en el bosque y proporcionaban madera para la construcción y la fabricación de carbón. Entre los miembros de una misma cuadrilla surgían desafíos para demostrar cuál era al más rápido, fuerte y hábil con el hacha o la sierra, pronto llegaron las apuestas para dar emoción a estos retos…
En el siglo XIX se registran las primeras competiciones públicas en las plazas de multitud de pueblos naciendo de este modo las competiciones de aizkolaris.
Actualmente en cualquier rincón del País Vasco y en muchos lugares de España y Francia se puede disfrutar de estas intensas competiciones, estos duelos individuales y por equipos que no dejan indiferente a nadie al contemplar la espectacularidad y emoción de un deporte tan único como universal.

Bizkaiko Golkoan, Espainia eta Frantziaren arteko mugaren bi aldeetan, antzina-antzinatik bisi dira Euskaldunak, bere kemenari eta ausardiari erronka egiten dion naturaren kontra borroka egiten ohituta dagoen herri lehiatsua.
